Fantastic launch of the Skills for a Sustainable Skyline Taskforce yesterday morning in collaboration with the City of London Corporation. It’s a real honour to be a part of this taskforce, all of whom are so passionate about achieving NetZero across Central London.
London is the hub for the UK’s commercial real estate and technology sectors, and it’s vital that the city sets a precedent to decarbonise real estate and achieve NetZero by 2050. The Skills for a Sustainable Skyline is dedicated to not only raising awareness of how the sector must be decarbonised, but also providing the tools, influence, and experience needed to push forward on sustainability.
Workforce skills are going to be an essential part of the journey to NetZero. During 2021, 60% of construction firms struggled to fill vacancies. At the same time, over 91% of over 100 industry professionals agree that the commercial built environment lacks sufficient skilled workers to achieve NetZero.
We cannot achieve the urgent NetZero targets needed without identifying the vast talent pool required as the sustainability sector becomes a core new industry. It is inevitably going to take too long to reduce the massive carbon crisis we are in, so this skills taskforce is a major first step in the long term thinking required to deliver a strategy for success.
